Air Jordan 1 ‘UNC’ 2025 Vs. 2015: What’s the Difference?

The "Bred" and "Chicago" colorways are the most legendary of the eight original Air Jordan 1 colorways that were released in 1985.  Here at Sneaker Freaker, however, we're representing the powerful—and frequently underestimated—"UNC."  This AJ1 honors the greatest of all time's tenure as a Tar Heels player, drawing inspiration from the University of North Carolina, Michael Jordan's alma mater.  Jordan Brand has visited the UNC numerous times over the years, using the numerous MJ signatures as canvases to create that beloved Tar Heels blue.  The newest model of the Air Jordan 1 "UNC" will be released in May, which will be the icon's third comeback.

There has been disagreement among bettors on the changes ever when the 2025 version's images were initially leaked.  To clear up any confusion before the May 10 release, we've outlined the distinctions between the 2015 and 2025 Air Jordan 1 "UNC"!

Let's start with a quick history

The Air Jordan 1 "UNC," officially known as "Dark Powder Blue," was introduced in the middle of the 1980s. It was available in eight different colorways, including "Bred," "Chicago," "Royal," "Neutral Grey," "White/Black," "White/Blue," and "Black Toe."  Out of all these color schemes, the "UNC" palette most evoked MJ's time in college, while the other colorways paid homage to the colors of Jordan's former team, the Chicago Bulls.

With a fantastic season that included a game-winning shot against Georgetown University, Michael Jordan famously emerged from the freshman gates. Jordan Brand has since made it a point to cover all of their best models in that distinctive "Dark Powder Blue" and white. Only a few retros imitate the original colorway, however, Beaverton has utilized it sparingly for the AJ1.

Not until 2003 did the first remake arrive following their original publication.  Twelve years later, the "UNC" made a reappearance in original specifications, with the Off-White joint version following in 2018.  As part of their "Reimagined" line, Jordan Brand will bring the "UNC" back to life ten years after the last real throwback.

Pay attention to Color Crazy

Regarding colorways, Jordan Brand is the undisputed authority, yet with the latest Air Jordan 1 "UNC," they have uncharacteristically fallen short.  The "UNC" color, as many sneakerheads believe, has never really matched the original since it is too bright, according to critics.  The same criticism was made of the 2015 vintage, the 2018 Off-Whites, and now this May's edition as well.  However, we will give them some leeway because the colors appear a little strange, but this is more a result of the "Reimagined" dated vibes than a direct mistake.  However, we greatly prefer the 2015 pair's tones when comparing them visually.

Next, Faux-Aged Vs. New

As this fresh ‘UNC’ is part of the ‘Reimagined’ series, Jordan Band have switched-up their approach to those of previous retros.

Reimagined pairs have previously undergone minor colorway or material changes.  Jordan Brand has decided to use artificially aged details for this "UNC."  Since SF has already stated that pre-distressed and faux-vintage sneakers are absurd, our prejudice may already be evident.  However, a number of recent modifications give the 2025 version the appearance of being ten years old. First, the 2015 appears dazzling white because to the somewhat yellowed leather base layer.  Throughout the top half of the 2025, leather is purposefully cracked.  Last but not least, the 2015 pair's midsole is a timeless white color, whilst the more recent model has that notoriously phony, yellowed appearance.  By all means, get yours on May 10 if you're sick of your brand-new Jordans looking like they were dug out from the back of a wet closet.  The other option is to spend a lot of money on a DS 2015 "UNC."

Finally, 2015 vs 2025 shape

We can undoubtedly analyze the distinctions between the Air Jordan 1 OG 2015 and the 2025, but there aren't enough words in one language to debate which of the two shapes is truly better.

The largest change is in the collar's overall height, with the older pair choosing a higher and maybe sleeker style.  While the 2015 version slopes backwards towards the heel, the 2025 version likewise aims for a straighter finish on the collar's top.  Similar circumstances apply to the tongue, which is flush on the newer form and rides higher on the 2015.  They are identical except for them and a few minor panel shifts.

Both versions of the Air Jordan 1 ‘UNC’ tell a story—from the 2015 release that honored MJ’s college legacy with vintage charm, to the 2025 edition that adds modern flair without losing its roots. While the 2015 pair is prized for its original leather quality and nostalgic purity, the 2025 version brings a refreshed build and a more streetwear-forward feel.
